About Us

Chappell & Dix Limited was started in the mid 1970s by its present day Managing Director, Stanley Chappell. The Company has grown to its present day size employing approximately fifty locally based personnel, including skilled tradesmen in all sections of the industry. Approximately one third of the skilled workforce have been trained as apprentices by the Company through the Construction Industry Training Board scheme and several joinery trainees have been nominated for and won national skills awards.

The Company became incorporated in June 1990 and moved shortly afterwards to its present location in Charfield, near Wotton-under-Edge. The move to larger premises also enabled the development of the Joinery Workshop which produces purpose made joinery to suit all buildings.

Over the years, Chappell & Dix Ltd have developed a reputation for quality construction from small domestic projects, say perhaps a small porch or extension to a domestic property, barn conversions, new build projects and complete restoration of historically important properties. The company continues to develop whilst retaining its well earned reputation within both the industry and the community. It prides itself on ensuring that due care and attention is given to all aspects of its work and that this is maintained and honoured by all its employees.

Directors Profile

Stanley Chappell

I once hired a building firm to do some work for me. It was on my first house, an old cottage. I was so disappointed at their quality of work that I dismissed them. I knew I could do a better, more sympathetic, restoration and so I set about doing the work myself in my spare time. When other people, who were in the same position, saw what I was doing, they asked me to work for them so soon, I gave up the job I was doing and took on building work. I was not a total amateur as my father was an expert in old English furniture and I was totally at home with joinery. He taught me well.

Some forty years on, I still have the same appetite for quality. We now employ some fifty plus workforce, many of whom started working for us straight from school, have done a full apprenticeship and have been trained to the highest order. Naturally quality does have its set backs - it is not cheap but, like me, what price do you put on disappointment?

Shaun Pearce

Shaun has gained thirty years’ experience in the construction industry on wide ranging projects such as schools, hospitals, hotels, churches and domestic work . He also achieved Higher National Certificate in Building Studies. He joined Chappell & Dix Ltd in 1997 as a Contracts Manager and was appointed a director in 2001.

Shaun has successfully completed contracts for the MOD, British Nuclear Fuels, several health authorities, the Landmark Trust, English Heritage, along with numerous private architectural practices.

Through his reputation for high standards and integrity along with his knowledge and experience this has helped build ongoing close working relationships with both consultants and clients.

Chris Shaw

After a successful introduction to the construction industry during which time he achieved the Higher National Certificate in Building Studies, Chris started his career with Chappell and Dix Ltd in 1993 as an estimator/quantity surveyor.

After a short time with the company he was successfully securing contracts on a regular basis whilst also taking overall responsibility for Quantity Surveying duties for the Company; this success led to him being made Financial Director in 2001.

Chris prides himself on always acting with integrity and on the trust that he has earned through his open book approach with clients, consultants and sub-contractors alike.

Jenny Chappell

I was trained as a private secretary too many years ago to mention and before giving up work altogether to have children, I gained experience as personal assistant to lecturers at Leicester University and the Area Treasurer for Derbyshire Area Health Authority. Stan had already been in the building business for a few years before I started working for him on a part-time basis, fitting in with school children, typing estimates and keeping the books but over the years, like the Company, the job has grown into a full-time plus assistant position.
